At Repsol, we improve the design of facilities, processes, and management systems and invest in new technologies to minimize atmospheric emissions in the areas where we operate.
In addition to greenhouse gases, our main atmospheric emissions are sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides, (NOx), and emissions of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs).
Contribution in the transportation sector:
All the fuels we sell comply with current quality standards. We apply standard EN228 for gasolines and EN590 for diesels at our refineries in Spain. These specifications imply manufacturing sulfur-free gasolines and diesels (maximum of 10 mg/kg) with a low aromatic compound content (benzene content of less than 1% v/v in gasoline). This implies a significant contribution to environmental improvement due to the consequent reduction of VOC emissions into the atmosphere. We have improved our processes to achieve these objectives.
Additionally, we continue to improve the quality of the fuels at the La Pampilla Refinery in Peru through a project that will allow us to produce diesel and gasolines with a sulfur content of 0.005% by mass of sulfur. The new facilities have the capacity to desulfurize the diesel produced at the refinery and in 2017 we will start up a gasoline block.
Furthermore, we contribute to improving air quality by promoting LPG for transportation. At present we have more than 300 supply points for AutoGas at different Repsol Group service stations, and we are gradually expanding this network.
We have been selling AdBlue at Repsol since 2006 under our Blue+ brand, leading the Spanish service station market with over 320 points of sale. AdBlue is not a fuel or an additive, but rather a urea solution that reacts with the exhaust fumes of diesel vehicles with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology and converts nitrogen oxides, which are highly polluting, into compounds that are harmless for the atmosphere and the environment (nitrogen and water vapor).
Additionally, we continue to promote electric mobility through IBIL and contribute to emission reduction through the use of biofuels.
Contribution to the domestic sector:We supply a heating diesel (BiEnergy e+10) specially designed for next-generation boilers (condensation and blue flame burner technology). This diesel makes it possible to reduce NOx emissions by an average of 30% and reduces practically all particle emissions, CO and SO2, making it more environmentally friendly.
